Couples Therapy Is More Than Sex

WHO IS COUPLES THERAPY FOR

Couples therapy is not just about sex. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, my training and background focus on all aspects of the relationship. While intimacy and sexuality may be part of our sessions, I also look at the overall structure of the relationship, including patterns of communication, emotional connection, conflict, and how disagreements impact the relationship over time. As a sex therapist, I also bring specialized training in sexuality and intimacy to couples therapy, creating space to talk openly about the parts of your relationship that may feel difficult, vulnerable, or disconnected.

Therapy provides a compassionate, nonjudgmental space to explore the experiences, beliefs, and patterns that shape your relationship with yourself and your partner. Together, we'll work toward greater self-awareness, confidence, communication, and connection using evidence-based approaches tailored to your relationship and individual experiences.

Couples therapy can support a wide range of concerns, from mismatched desire and communication difficulties to painful intercourse, emotional disconnection, navigating an open relationship, or healing after betrayal. Whether you are in a non-monogamous relationship structure or a monogamous relationship, couples therapy can help you understand the deeper emotional patterns underneath recurring conflicts and create new ways of communicating, connecting, and responding to one another.

Every part of your relationship is welcome in this room. Whatever shape it takes. Marriage counseling is a process of unearthing patterns that exist beneath the surface. Overtime habits begin that are often unintentional. By bringing the focus to how that is occurring in your relationship, we can write a new narrative of how you would like the relationship to sound. Sex therapy is interwoven through this process as the emotional intimacy is rebuilt we also look at how it impacts sex and connection.

Couples therapy can help you understand the patterns keeping you stuck and develop new ways of communicating, connecting, and responding to one another. Together, we can work toward greater emotional intimacy, improved communication, more satisfying sex, and a stronger sense of connection.

Research consistently shows that evidence-based relationship therapy can help improve relationship satisfaction, communication, and emotional connection. While no therapist can guarantee a particular outcome, many couples experience meaningful improvements when they are committed to the process and work with a therapist who uses proven approaches such as Emotionally Focused Therapy.

HOW COUPLES THERAPY CAN HELP

NICE TO MEET YOU

Meet Madeline, LMFT

Couples Therapy Portland OR

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist here to help you have a better relationship with your body and in your relationship. I’m a couples and sex therapist in Portland, OR and meet with people virtually across Oregon. I was trained from the beginning for couples therapy locally at George Fox University. Since then, I’ve specialized with a sexual health certification at the University of Michigan.

I work with couples building healthier sexualities, LGBTQIA+ folx exploring gender and sexual expression, and people on their own intimate healing path — ENM, poly, or monogamous. One of the reasons I became a marriage and relationship therapist is because I am drawn to helping couples create better connections with one another and come back to the love that exists between each other. Marriage counseling is some of my favorite work.

If you need help finding your way back to sexual intimacy, I would be honored to guide you on the journey.
